Welcome to the BGAA web site

This is still a work in progress, but I'm excited to give the BGAA this new site that I hope will become a fun and exciting (and useful) tool so we can connect and keep abreast of everything going on out there.  My name is Tom Wheeler, and by day I build websites (like this).   But I'm also an artist myself, and I'm currently a board member of the BGAA.

I have lots of plans for the new site - and as I get more time I'll be working to improve it.  The site is built using a content management system called Drupal. What does that mean?  Well, for one, it will be much easier to post new content and keep the information fresh on the site.  Drupal has a bunch of pre-built tools and features we're using here (for example, I didn't have to program this blog tool, I just activated it).  I have spent a few days designing, and putting it together - but no heavy programming was required.  It's more a process of configuring tools and knowing what & how to implement them.  Lots of CSS styling.

There are ways to improve things though - I'm not entirely comfortable with how the events dates have to be put in, that might take a little getting used to. Or I might tweak it a bit.

Other features coming soon:

  • As a BGAA member, you'll be able to have a user account - which will enable you to post samples of your artwork to your own gallery page.
  • You'll also be able to update your own information - like phone, email, address for the membership list.
  • You'll be able to see and download a current version of the membership list.
  • You'll be able to see links to other BGAA members websites
  • You'll be able to post your own blog entries - like this - and other users can post comments.  I think this will be a great way to talk to each other, discuss art subjects / events, and anything!
  • You'll be able to post new events that might be happening around town - this can be anything from gallery shows, opportunities to show your art, volunteer opportunities, classes, etc..  I hope we can become the place to go when people want to know what's happening around Battle Ground and Vancouver in the art scene.  We're not restricting this to just events that involve BGAA, and we're not competing with other organizations.  Our mission is to promote the arts - so let's promote them!
